I don’t know about you, but suddenly I’m very focused on fireplaces and warm socks. The cat and I are competing for places to curl up. But don’t despair! While cold temps and the long, dark nights encourage hibernation, there are some fun opportunities coming up to meet with your colleagues. First, I hope to see you at Winter Conference in Altoona, Iowa on Feb. 11-13! This year’s offerings include talks on: ophthalmology, clinical pathology, exotics medicine, African Swine Fever preparedness, equine practice, theriogenology, environmental enrichment and animal welfare, pet nutrition, wellness, practice management, bovine practice, and a day-long session for veterinary technicians. Plenty to learn (or in my case, relearn)! If you need extra CE before the June deadline, we are also offering two 3 hr. dental wet lab sessions and an evening 3 hr. CE and dinner meeting on Tuesday, before the traditional Wednesday and Thursday conference. Come interact with colleagues, classmates and friends. There will be a lunch each day, and a reception on Wednesday evening. In between sessions, you can support the veterinary students by perusing the SAVMA Silent Auction tables (but don’t tell Bill if you see me bidding on things…). Latest News Member Survey on Prescription/Pharmacy Issues The Iowa Board of Veterinary Medicine (IBVM) has asked the IVMA to survey our members about issues related to pharmacy policies and Iowa regulations on prescriptions. There are growing concerns about the misuse of controlled substances through veterinary prescriptions to animals. The PMP (Prescription Monitoring Program) has been put in place to monitor prescription drug use but is voluntary for veterinarians. Several pharmacies now have policies restricting certain types of veterinary prescriptions. To help the Iowa Board of Veterinary Medicine and the Iowa Board of Pharmacy determine how pharmacies are handling dispensing prescriptions to veterinarians’ own animals, please complete a short, (2-3 minute) anonymous survey. IDALS Proposes Changes to Strengthen Companion Animal Welfare Rules Learn more about the proposed changes from the Iowa Department of Agriculture that will elevate the companion animal care and housing requirements for licensed commercial breeders, animal shelters, dealers and kennels in the state.
